Communication with the Dead

When the movie “Ghost” came out many years ago, it became my favorite movie. At the time, I didn’t think too much about attempted communication between the living and the dead as being something that GOD disapproves of. I didn’t believe that type of communication was possible, so it was just a movie, a love story that reached past death.

I’m not for sure when life changed for me concerning many things about my relationship with The Father and with Yeshua. But it did; Praise God! I came to realize that I was not obedient to Yeshua’s teachings. I came to realize also that GOD’s law matters. It’s one of the things that teaches us what He loves and what He hates. We, as His children should love what He loves and hate what He hates. Instead of saying what law are we under, or declaring we are not under any law, we should be seeking and embracing what pleases Him. It’s not a “have to obey”. It’s a “want to obey”.

One of the things that changed was entertainment choices. Watching shows that contained attempted communication with the dead was out. In any form or fashion. I do not want that type of entertainment to enter into my being. I want a clean mind and a pure heart, an obedient will to please The Father and Yeshua.

Deuteronomy 18:9 – 14 says, “When you enter the land which the LORD your God is giving you, you shall not learn to imitate the detestable things of those nations. “There shall not be found among you anyone who makes his son or his daughter pass through the fire, one who uses divination, a soothsayer, one who interprets omens, or a sorcerer,  or one who casts a spell, or a medium, or a spiritist, or one who consults the dead.”

“For whoever does these things is detestable to the LORD; and because of these detestable things the LORD your God is going to drive them out before you.  “You are to be blameless before the LORD your God.” “For these nations, which you are going to dispossess, listen to soothsayers and diviners, but as for you, the LORD your God has not allowed you to do so.” – NASB

Part of the reason the Canaanites were dispossessed of their country was this! They used divination, soothsayers (someone who practices divination or predicts the future), interpreting omens (using objects to predict signs), sorcery, spell casting, mediums and spiritists to communicate with the dead. GOD told His people not to imitate the Canaanites in these practices. These practices are detestable to Him.

In Leviticus, chapters 19 and 20, we read this: “‘Do not turn to mediums or spiritists; do not seek them out to be defiled by them. I am the LORD your God.” … “‘As for the person who turns to mediums and to spiritists, to play the prostitute with them, I will also set My face against that person and will cut him off from among his people.  You shall consecrate yourselves therefore and be holy, for I am the LORD your God.  So you shall keep My statutes and practice them; I am the LORD who sanctifies you…Now a man or a woman who is a medium or a spiritist must be put to death. They shall be stoned with stones; they have brought their own deaths upon themselves.’”  – NASB

He is our LORD, our GOD, we are to seek His direction, His will, His guidance in what to do, not mediums or spiritists. This says that if we turn to mediums and spiritists for that guidance, we play the prostitute and He will set His face against the person who does that. Repent and ask God for forgiveness. As for the one who is the medium or spiritist, they need to repent also. Repent and seek GOD’s grace and mercy.

King Saul really messed up. In chapter 25 of 1 Samuel we read of Samuel’s death. In chapter 28, the Philistines have gathered for war against Israel. Saul is not sure whether he can defeat the Philistines. He doesn’t have Samuel now to ask.  He is afraid. He seeks an answer from God but God does not answer. Saul instructs his servants to find a medium or a spiritist for him to inquire from. The problem is that Saul has supposedly had all of the mediums and spiritists removed from the land. His servants tell him of one woman that is a medium at En-dor.

Saul disguises himself and goes to see the medium who is concerned that a trap is being laid for her but Saul convinces her that all is OK and she does “call up” Samuel. Saul asks Samuel what he should do about the Philistines.  Samuel asks Saul, “But why ask me, since the LORD has abandoned you and has become your enemy?” God had turned His face from Saul for disobeying Him. Saul had offered a sacrifice to please the people when only the priests and prophets were approved to do that. Saul disobeyed God. Saul was supposed to wipe out the Amalekites but Saul did not. He kept animals of the Amalekites to use as sacrifices. Then Saul seeks direction from a medium! Further disobedience. Saul lost his kingship due to disobedience.

“Tell me,” Samuel said. “Does the Lord really want sacrifices and offerings? No! He doesn’t want your sacrifices. He wants you to obey him. 23 Rebelling against God or disobeying him because you are proud is just as bad as worshiping idols or asking them for advice. You refused to do what God told you, so God has decided that you can no longer be king.” (I Samuel 15: 22-23 NASB).

Kingdom citizens seek to obey the kingdom rules.  Rebelling or disobeying Him because we are proud is just as bad as worshiping idols! He has instructed His people to have nothing to do with mediums and spiritists. It’s a serious matter. Do not do it. Do not play around with it. Do not make it into a joke to laugh about. Walk away from it or anything related to it, and protect your relationship with The Father and with Yeshua. I believe we are called to seek what pleases The Father, to do the best that we can to align with what He loves and hate what He hates. That means we need to know what those things are. He has made some of those things quite plain. He does not want His people seeking out mediums and spiritists. We want His will in our hearts. It’s a heart matter.
